Nick Kyrgios. — ReutersNick Kyrgios has backed Stefano Tsitsipas to win the ongoing Australian Open 2024 which is currently being held in Melbourne.Tsitsipas, 25, was the runner-up of last year’s edition where he was handed a defeat in the final by no other than Novak Djokovic. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Kyrgios expressed his admiration for Tsitsipas' resilience during the contest. Surprising his followers, he named Tsitsipas as one of the favourites to win the men's title."I think Tsitsipas wins the Aus Open," Kyrgios wrote on his X account. Tsitsipas faced a challenging season on the ATP tour last year, securing just one title and dropping out of the men's top five rankings. The Greek player also encountered a tough start to his Melbourne campaign, requiring four sets to overcome his first two opponents.Nick Kyrgios, on the other hand, had to skip this year's Australian Open due to a wrist injury. The 28-year-old is yet to announce his return to professional tennis but has taken on the role of a commentator for Eurosport, a sports TV network.During his commentary on Tsitsipas' second-round match against fellow Australian Jordan Thompson, the seventh seed initially fell behind a set but rallied to secure a 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-2, 7-6(4) victory, advancing to the third round of the Australian Open.Interestingly, Tsitsipas also overcame a set deficit in his Melbourne opener against lucky loser Zizou Bergs. He is set to face France's Luca Van Assche in the quest for a place in the second week. While talking after the game, the Greek was asked whether he would be able to win his first-ever Grand Slam in Australia after losing two in his career.Tsitsipas jokingly said that Djokovic needs to be less selfish so others can win."Numbers don’t lie. Novak has won here 12 times. He’s a very selfish person. I think he just needs to wake up one day & get less selfish. Sharing is caring more type of vibe," the 25-year-old said."There are 2 scenarios. Someone needs to beat Novak that’s not me. Or it has to be me. We’ll find a way," he added.
